Submit a Manuscript

Start with the idea, not the attachment.

The NCO Historical Society accepts initial inquiries for selected manuscripts that fit its military-history and enlisted-experience publishing focus. Please do not send a complete manuscript until requested.

What we look for

Projects should have a clear connection to the military experience and a defined reason for publication. Strong candidates may include military memoir, Army and NCO history, leadership grounded in service, veteran transition, institutional history, or carefully documented subjects that preserve an overlooked part of the record.

The Society is a boutique imprint. We evaluate fit and editorial value rather than maintaining an open-volume publishing pipeline.

Before you inquire

  • Know your intended reader.
  • Be able to summarize the manuscript in a few paragraphs.
  • Provide an approximate word count and current manuscript status.
  • Disclose whether the work has been published, submitted, or contracted elsewhere.
  • Be prepared to describe rights ownership and any third-party photographs or material.
Our process

Initial publishing inquiry

We intentionally do not accept manuscript uploads through the public website. If a project appears to fit the imprint, we will request the appropriate material directly.

Introduce the project. Tell us the working title, subject, audience, approximate length, and what makes the book worth publishing.
Tell us about the author. Include relevant background, writing or subject-matter experience, and any existing audience or platform.
Explain the fit. Describe why the NCO Historical Society is the appropriate imprint for the project.
Wait for a request. If we want to evaluate the manuscript itself, we will contact you with next steps.
Inquiry form
